John and Annette have been traipsing around China for the past week and we joined them in Chongqing to embark on the Century Star for a four day sailing of the Yangtze River. We were greeted with dancing dragons and a festive drum corp as we boarded the boat. Our first stop was the Ghost City. Up we walked to the top of the riverbank. Soon the steps will be diminished greatly as the water levels rise. There are a lot of beautiful flowers in the temple area. It might be sort of a lily/iris. It is said that if you can climb these 33 stairs at a time you can make a wish. We all made it! We had clear days for the most part of our voyage. We got up early for coffee on the top deck to enjoy the quietness of the day. The talented staff performed the splendid entertainment show. The scenery is spectacular still even though a good percentage of the gorge is already beneath the water. We debarked and took a small wooden skiff to visit the Lesser Lesser Three Gorges. Once, these small streams were navigable only by Chinese trackers who pulled small boats through. Our boatman treated us to a hauntingly beautiful tribal melody. The orange life jacket was once a native wedding garment. Impressive and heavily secured with military presence, Three Gorges Dam Project was an engineering feat of extreme scale. At last we checked off the cruise Century Star.
